It was originally called "The Bureau Saloon" until it was purchased by Mr. Frank Huber and the name was changed to Huber's. In 1891, Mr. Huber hired Jim Louie, a Chinese immigrant, to do the cooking. In those days if you bought a drink you would get a free turkey sandwich and some coleslaw. With just a few booths and bench seats in the old bar, most of the patrons would go around and converse with a drink in one hand and a turkey sandwich in the other. Wow! The Spanish coffee is good, but preparation and the whole show of making it is just amazing. The cheesecake is oh so fluffy and like clouds in your mouth. And whiskey soaked bread pudding is so yummy!

Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice! Turkey piccata! Awesome bread! As one of the oldest restaurants in Portland, Huber's more than lives up to the hype, and it's one of my favorite spots in the Pacific Northwest. I try to hit this up whenever I'm working in Portland, and coworkers I've taken here love it too. They've really nailed comfort food for cloudy, misty weather. On a cold Portland night, the warm atmosphere inside is a welcome respite. Customer service is top notch and the bartender who is usually here rocks. If you are in Downtown Portland, you must hit this historic institution. There is a good reason it has been in business this long. The fresh squeezed grapefruit juice alone is worth the trip!

I hate to say it, but I'm a traditionalist. Love the history over hipness.  In fact history can be hip - if you do it like these guys. On Saturday night., I'm looking at a packed house of hipsters and old school types. The common denominator? Seems to be good affordable comfort food in a classy wood paneled environment. The beer bread was unique. The house coleslaw with bay shrimps was great.  My hot turkey sandwich was killer (not on the menu, offered by the super friendly bartender as a variation of the traditional turkey dinner). Good food this cheap is nuts. Il let Old Fashioned too. I think the rainy weather births these places in Portland.
